In the course of your networking, the clearer you make it that you’re not looking for a job at the present time, the more attractive you’ll be to the hiring manager. This may seem counterintuitive, but it’s true. The fact is that almost no one likes a job seeker, but nearly everyone likes a solutions provider.

I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment. It is better to seek
“advice and guidance” from anyone with whom you are networking.
Not only do they feel freer to meet with you, but they feel freer
to refer you along to someone else. They know they will not be
putting a friend or colleague in a difficult spot, because you are
asking for advice and guidance, not for a job. Is it understood
you want a job? Sure. That’s why it’s not necessary to put people
on the spot. Ultimately, your integrity will speak for itself,
putting you in a stronger position to be recommended for suitable
jobs that do come up.
